Description
Fort Marlborough is an auxiliary building that was built by Sir John Churchill in the early 18th century.
It is located in the south of the port of Mahon, especially in the bay of Saint-Etienne (Villacarlos).
The last reform of Fort Marlborough dates from the end of the eighteenth century.
The purpose of this fort was to protect the strategic port of Mahon, as it was coveted by various powers.
It was considered at the time as one of the most valuable in the Mediterranean, due to the geographical location and characteristics, as it is wide, long and deep, which greatly facilitated the entry of ships.
This fortress has countermines, underground galleries dug in the rock halls and a ditch to protect the central area of the enclosure.
