Circuit des Forts
Description
The Col de Tende is a place full of history: the most convenient passage between Piedmont and the Mediterranean, it was constantly improved in order to facilitate the movement of people and the transport of goods.
Initially a simple mule track, created in 1652, the road was completed in 1782.
The opening of the road and railway tunnels resulted in the virtual abandonment of the old viabilities.
The border ridge, determined in 1947, is full of military constructions (forts, blockhouses), some of which like the Central fort offer a real architectural interest.
Six rectangular forts built between 1800 and 1900 by the Italian military genius sheltered troops until the end of the last war; Surrounded by a deep ditch, they are accessible by a drawbridge, which vileness irremediably degrades.
This itinerary allows a nice loop from the geographical Tende to link the fort, Fort Tabourde and Fort Pepin.
